Lyrics for It’s Carrboro

Lyrics: Brian Risk, Billy McCormick
Music: Brian Risk

It’s a place where the hippies and the hipsters meet
Gonna get my grub on at the Weaver Street
Hoola-hoopers out front and they got some bare feet
Got a lot of bongo drummers and a lot of different beats

I’m shoppin at Tha Weave - the total is twenty
He don’t pull out a Jackson, you know he’s droppin’ Plenty
At the Farmers Market I buy my spinich
For the prez I want Dennis Kucinich

Wootini got a lot of funky toyz
If you disrespect you betta bring ya boyz
You know you gonna check my stance, my poize
C’mon Carrboro, let’s make some noize!

If it’s locally owned: It’s Carrboro!
Oganically grown: It’s Carrboro!
Your heart will warm: It’s Carrboro!
Got that hometown charm: It’s Carrboro!

Raleigh and Durham and Fayetteville
If it ain’t in Carrboro it aint worth my skill
I won’t even go to Chapel Hill
My momma cools her pies on the window-sill

Vis to the Art to the Video
Blockbuster; Pay-Per-View; Netflix: NO!
The Viz got the foreign flicks from Hong Kong
Over 21 room to get your freak on

It’s Sunday night; sportin’ my bling bling
OCSC! get that dollar Yeungling
Chillin’ on the crux of Bim and Fidelity
C’mon Carrboro let’s kick some melody

With wide bike lanes: It’s Carrboro!
And whole wheat grains: It’s Carrboro!
Who’s the best in show: It’s Carrboro!
Where you wanna go: It’s Carrboro!

Tylers and Acme and Spotted Dog
So close together, G, you won’t have to jog
Beehive Hairdo next to Maple View
gonna get my ink on down at Glenn’s Tattoo

Every Fall it’s got a mackin’ music fest
Its the Paris of the Piedmont it’s been confessed
It passed the test, it’s passed the rest.
Like Ron Jeremy Carrboro’s been blessed!

We’re cookin’ music so good the Cat’s Cradle meowed
Showin so much respect my sensei bowed
With public schools to make your momma proud
C’mon Carrboro let’s shout out loud!

Babes at Padgett Station: It’s Carrboro!
Mike Roig’s metal creations: it’s Carrboro!
Club nova thrift store: It’s Carrboro!
A DSI encore: It’s Carrboro!

OpenEye Cafe: It’s Carrboro!
it’s cool to be gay: It’s Carrboro!
The kind of dunk you slam: It’s Carrboro!
Where we dropped this jam: It’s Carrboro!

Theatre? The ArtsCenter? After 30 years don’t we count? Come on, add another verse. Ten by Ten — international festival of ten minute plays, where else you gonna see that?

that’s good work (for boys white as carrboro). ;) also omitted: nice price books and the really really free market, but leave it all for part II!

it’s only a matter of time before your fame swells beyond the local scene.

it’s cool to be gay: It’s Carrboro!

Somebody come to a Board of Aldermen meeting and ask that this be made the town song! I’d do it myself but think that it would be a little too “glory grabbing” which is a very non Carrbroro thing to do!
So somebody please come ask ok?

Please add Club Nova- and the Club Nova thrift shop and apartments. Carrboro is the helping place for people with mental health problems!

There is also the PTA thirft shop, and Elmo’s.

Maybe something about the uniquely Carrboro 4th of July parade/party: there’s all the kids dressed up like the statue of liberty, and the library booksale, and the anti-PATRIOT ACT people.

Nice work!

DSI can’t wait for this to drop tonight after Flicker.

We also dig the Tuna Steak Sandwich from Tyler’s — Anything from Elmo’s Diner (especially since we’re right next door) — The ArtsCenter (artistic inspiration from back in the day) — What’s the name of the place going into Temple Ball? — Katie’s Pretzels — We Rock Carr Mill Mall style!

Yo! What about us? For almost 50 years, Mellott Contractors has been selling the Carrboro hippies their sand, mulch and gravel, as well as causing the ultra-environmental Carrboro citizens to have heart-attacks because we drive trucks.

Hey, give us a call if you need anything!!

i heard this song one day randomly on 89.3 while i was driving, moving from one end of town to another and was hysterical. by the time i pulled up to the house, the guys helping me thought i was insane cause i was bumping it yelling “it’s carr-bor-o, where it’s cool to be gay!”
seriously. thank you. this song is hilarious.

I just moved to Denver from Carrboro last year, and this song brought me right back! I’ve since sent it to the Denver UNC Alum group…you’re getting national play boys.
Love it!

I second that–leaving out The ArtsCenter is uncool. Birthed in Carr Mill, moved above Armadillo and then two doors down from the Cradle, we’ve been Keeping Carrboro Weird and artsy for 32 years.

EXCELLENT! And just in case you do make a part deux, it’d be really cool to see an ultimate frisbee game in the background or something. Man, I miss Carrboro!

SO glad Anne Everitt forwarded your song to me. My husband and I moved to Gainesville last year and, man, do I miss Carr-bor-o and especially Weaver Street. Paris of the Piedmont? Mais, bien sur!
